From the late teens through the twenties Charles Kreymborg and other prolific BADAH architects designed many Bronx buildings in the conventional historical styles which preceded the Art Deco period. Here Kreymborg, transitioning to the new style, experiments with verticality. Brick banding combines horizontal and vertical in a rather strange grid. In the Wurts Bros. photo the original Parapet was something to behold. ED zig zag crown and ogee brackets in the Lobby are familiar. The random abstract Terrazzo pattern (excluding the center rosette) is very unusual but surprisingly almost exactly the same pattern is found up the street at 1045 Anderson by an unknown architect in a building not in any way Deco.
