Many thanks to redditor u/ArtDecoNewYork 1995 who sent us the address of this great ED after viewing BADAHA on the reddit Art Deco community when we posted there. The very first visitor submission and the first positive result from our social media outreach. The facade and cast stone Parapet pinnacles are so very similar to 3604 Bronx Boulevard and 2487 Davidson Avenue that they are all surely by the same as yet unknown architect. The Fabulous Fake Fireplace also recalls those at 2487 Davidson and 985 Anderson Avenue, the latter by Charles Kreymborg , so maybe he designed them all? The Lobby terrazzo has an unusual 4 color rectilinear abstract pattern that never repeats. A fabulous building all round. Except that now, with its Parapet destroyed, it is another that goes from the Should Be Landmarked Collection to the Lost Deco Hall of Shame!

Zig zag Parapet over the center section of this grand well maintained black & tan ED. Unusual Brick pilasters with Cast Stone cooling fins at the Portal. Generous "Stoops" and dynamic Terrazzo in the Lobby. When first posted only a bit of Parapet on the North section had been removed. Now the entire Parapet has been replaced!

Typical ED verticality displayed in an exceptionally well preserved small building. Some interesting plaster in the Lobby.

Twin sister of 2185 Bolton next door. Both now without original Parapets. The identical Plaster relief moldings in both Lobbies are spectacular. Compare the gold, silver & beige paint job with the dark red & black at 2185. UPDATE: Based on a 1935 article in the New York Times, the architect is Charles Kreymborg.

Very nice in every way up in Woodlawn by the Yonkers line. Deco all over the Bronx. The only sour note is the fascia molding on the renovated canopy where the original stainless steel was replaced. It can be glimpsed in the old Tax photo. Lucien Pisciotta was a minor player but a major talent.

Thank you Hyman Feldman & Dr. Billig. Bronx Park East & Reiss Place facades are straight ahead monochrome CBD but, delightfully, the Pelham Parkway entrance side goes wild. The wavy Parapet plaque is a Feldman signature, probably Terra Cotta here but Cast Stone at 275 West 238th Street and 1175/1185 Morris Avenue. All photos from 2007.

Andrew S. Dolkart, author of the LPC Report for the “Commie Coops" ascribes its style to Northern European Expressionism, not Art Deco. BADAHA begs to differ. Certainly not the German Expressionism of Eric Mendelssohn or Hans Scharoun. Nor the Dutch Expressionism of Michel de Klerk, its best known practitioner in brick. Jessor’s “Coops” have none of the biologically inspired plastic sculptural forms that characterize Expressionism. They belong rightly in the Early Deco style of prominent verticals terminating in cast stone with abstract corbeled geometric rectilinear forms at the parapets as well as the bold corner brick patterns that seem to prefigure corner windows.

In 2007 the sister building at 2165 Bolton had already lost its Parapet, how distressing then to discover that 2185 Bolton had suffered the same fate by 2021. The Cast Stone pinnacles were gloriously asymmetrical. Lobbies in both are spectacular. UPDATE: Based on a 1935 article in the New York Times, the architect is Charles Kreymborg.

2166 owner take better care than owner of sister building 2180 next door - see Notes for 2180. Despite this, taken together they are still magnificent.

2180 has lost decorative central parts of Parapet but sister building 2166 has retained them. It has also lost the Shapiro Law Office sign which is a good thing. Sumptuous Lobby. Rebuilt corner window spandrels not well done.
